I am currently researching and writing a book on cinema and television in Los Angeles in the 1960s and ’70s, a particularly complex and rich period in the history of both motion pictures and urbanization. This will be a sequel to my 2012 monograph Hollywood Cinema and the Real Los Angeles, which focused on an earlier period, the 1900s-1950s.

I’m a member of an international team advising the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles on its digitization of the Street Photographs of Ed Ruscha, the world famous LA Pop and Conceptual artist. I’m also writing new journal articles about the attitudes to film and television of the influential French sociologist Henri Lefebvre, and about Grands soirs et petits matins (1978), the documentary about students’ and workers’ protest in Paris in May 1968, directed by the filmmaker and photographer William Klein.

I occasionally write journalistic pieces – for example, here and here – and I am on the advisory board of the online open access journal Mediapolis.
